Apparently ESMValTool is moving to Iris (https://scitools-iris.readthedocs.io/en/stable/whatsnew/3.0.html#announcements)

That's good, but it's a little disappointing that there are still 2 competing tools (Iris and xarray) for doing much the same thing.
