If you're like me, and have been searching for a solution to visualize CAM-SE output (e.g., ne30/ne120, variables indexed by ncol) in python without having to rely on NCL ncremap, there is a great ongoing discussion on github: https://github.com/UXARRAY/uxarray/issues/183

It looks like there are a variety of existing and upcoming solutions out there. This also links back to some discussions we had during the ESDS event.
