Visualization of the Front Range Air Pollution and Photochemistry Experiment (FRAPPE)

An advanced visualization schema was developed for the evaluation of the Front Range Air Pollution and Photochemistry Experiment (FRAPPE); with the goal of producing a means to compare forecast model data to in-situ measurements in four dimensions.


Data sources for this schema include samplings taken with the NSF/NCAR C-130 Hercules research aircraft, and output from the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-CHEM).  Forecast data was generated by the Yellowstone 1.5 petaflop IBM iDataPlex super-computer cluster at the NCAR Wyoming Supercomputing Center (NWSC).


NWSC’s Geyser data analysis cluster produced the forthcoming renderings, utilizing the open-source Visualization and Analysis Platform for Ocean, Atmosphere, and Solar Researchers (VAPOR).

Coalition for Academic Scientific Computation (CASC) brocure.

This cover visualization appears on the 2009 Coalition for Academic Scientific Computation (CASC) brocure. It depicts a snapshot in time of a numerically simulated supercell thunderstorm conducted by Associate Professor Leigh Orf at Central Michigan University. Precipitation magnitude is represented by the volume rendered field; the âstreamtubesâs updraft, forward flank downdraft, and rear flank downdraft. The Bryan Cloud Model (CM1), developed by George Bryan at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), created the simulation, which utilized massively parallel supercomputing resources at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). The goal of this research is to better understand the processes leading to tornado formation in supercells, the most powerful type of thunderstorm.
