Vapor can display geotiff images only. I don't know what an esri GIS map image is, but the OSGeo proj4 and gdal packages provide a number of conversion utilities for generating geotiffs. Note, not all projections are supported by vapor, but the most common ones are (e.g. cylindrical equidistant, mercator, lambert, etc.)
